It’s not that confusing. They wouldn’t be moderates if they didn’t believe that not being moderates would cost them votes. They’re desperately looking for someone to blame, because if the real answer is acknowledged, then it would mean the end of their centrality to the party.

Hard agree. Even where progressive candidates lost (texas 2nd, ex) they turned out voters. Arguably they're the ones who gave Graham the race of his life & progressive platform made it easier for people to vote for Biden/harris. That's my read
