Know what I did then? I grinded all 25 WQs every day to get the rep so I could see the other quest chains first. The story incentivized me to play because I got a cool little reward. I wasn't forced. I WANTED to see them. Now the game punishes you for playing too much via gates

The difference seems minor at first but the way it changes your perception of the game and your desire to play is immense. In MoP I WANTED to play more and the game incentivized it . In WoD/Legion/BfA I didn't care either way but was punished if I did play more because of gates

I've always fought against the nostalgic arguments of, "The past is better" but I honestly think that there were major gameplay changes in the new trilogy of expacs that really set the game backward, with the underhanded agenda being to keep people playing longer for less content

MOP is an expac that is looked back upon much better than it was received at the time. Granted I had more time to play then, but the rep grinds led to cool lore moments like this, and had the feeling of exploring a strange, mysterious land w/ rich cultures that embody good MMOs.
