I was a tipped earner in high school as a busser (1990-93). On a bad night our waitresses earned $100 in 6 hours, or $16.66 an hour. Good nights brought in $200, or $33.34 an hour. They typically shared 10% to the busser, that would leave $15 to $30 an hour. 1/2

If a waitress didn’t want to share their tips with the busser, they didn’t. Most the tip earners didn’t want an increase in hourly wages because it would ultimately reduce tip income while increasing tax burden. Tip income is harder for the government to track.

Can't we just take the next logical step, ending tipping entirely? Why not pay a suitable regular wage? Tipping is an archaic practice in this day and age.

I know a lot of waiters that would be taking huge pay cuts.

From someone who waited tables in Nebraska when I tell people here in Oregon that in Nebraska people make 2.13 an hour waiting tables they can’t believe it.
