NE's prisons are the 2nd-most overcrowded in the US, at 151% capacity, trailing only AL which is under fed order to fix the problem. Solutions begin w/ acknowledging of the role of institutional racism in the disproportionate arrest, prosecution, & sentencing of Black people.
We also know that the economic burden of incarceration far exceeds the cost of investing in preventative measures like quality education, job training, & mental health services. If we're serious about preventing crime and building safe communities, this is where we invest.
In the NE Legislature, we have worked collaboratively to find cross-partisan support for common sense solutions. We are already preparing for the 2021 session so we can get to work right away to restore voting rights, reform sentencing, decriminalize marijuana, end cash bail, + more. We’re in crisis, & we need common sense solutions both for public safety & the rehabilitation of offenders.
Thank you for answering a question I'd posted to @PaulHammelOWH earlier. How can it be safe for our prisons to have less staff, with more prisoners and less space? I just have a difficult time believing it.

Honestly didn't know our overcrowding problem was this bad, until class last week. We need to fix the system and not build another prison. Prisons are proven to not be effective at all.
