When you try to step back on this, to literally safe your own life, people let you know how disappointed they are in you. They are confused because you set a standard they want to keep seeing, without the kinds of breaks and self-care you actually need to maintain your best self.

"Gifted" ADHD are self sacrificing perfectionists who learned how to betray themselves to get an "A". They learn they are accepted by society only when striving for perfection.

It is not fair because often we are performing work that others would find exceptionally difficult to keep up, and get lambasted for struggling with the "easy" part. Easy for you maybe. But you can't do all the other things I do, can you?

There are healthier ways to get that "kick" but they require a lot of rest and self created novelty that many will not allow you to explore under their supervision.

Ugh, this is totally me. Can you repoint me to the article you mentioned? Everybody thinks I’m doing just fine, but it’s so much work and I’m kind of killing myself.

I feel that. It's so hard when you look ok, but you're very much not. It seems like the energy tank goes dry too fast, so now we are diverting energy from life support. To blend in, we just go with it. But I genuinely believe this coping mechanism is actively dangerous.

Can you go more in-depth on the OCD-like behaviors centered around anger+self-hate+panic? Does it apply to folks who were “gifted” early on but started failing to meet expectations around middle school? I relate to this but feel it can’t apply to me bc the gifted stage was short.
-
The OCD behaviors come from trying to force control over things you have little control over. So it's like, "This HAS to be THIS way or I lose my shit!" because literally you will lose track of everything. You develop obsessions with thoughts and rituals that keep you "useful".
