As with Van Gaal, footballers and managers are going to be asked about Qatar a lot this week. They can affect real change: - call for investigations into deaths - demand compensation for families

Two things about this. 1) as noted by , no indication is given of who financed this research. 2) If, as I read, 'the views expressed are those of the author and not those of the Institute (which has no corporate view)', how does this constitute 'new IEA research'?

Southgate speaking intelligently about human rights in Qatar and rightly pointing out the broad range and complexity of the issues, noting that the English FA can't hope to address them all.

In 2020 found that one of the IEA’s own advisors had accused it of being “a provocative attention seeker” masquerading as a charity to act as a lobbying outfit. Whose interests are they pursuing here?

This is a really eye-opening thread on how Qatar World Cup organisers' plans to sue German broadcasters foundered.

The story of Qatar's World Cup can be told through the story of Abdullah Ibhais, the jailed whistleblower at the heart of Qatar's public relations machine. My piece for on what he revealed, and why it matters now more than ever

I’ve written before about how a company with connections to Number 10, Priti Patel, and Matt Hancock came to win a £100m facemask contract at superhigh prices – but we’ve had a further disturbing leak. 🧵

Our last issue contained the brilliant “A Night on the Toon” by the legendary , a feature which, if anything, has only got more relevant. Eddie Howe might prefer to stick to football, but we don’t!

There is no cancel culture. None. And no first amendment problem. Some people in power are being criticized, not canceled, and because of the internet's broad reach, they feel it, and they don't like it. There *is* internet harm, and it aims to silence those *not* in power.

Just the owner of Manchester City (bottom right pic) forming part of a welcoming party for despot Al-Assad, a major Putin ally, and helping to normalise the Syrian president’s return to diplomatic life.

You have to wonder why these were not part of the mass execution of 81 people on Saturday and whether the Saudi authorities sought to make a point by carrying out these additional executions for the day of Johnson's visit.
