#OTD in 1958, USS Skate managed to circumnavigate the globe in 50 minutes. To accomplish this remarkable feat, the sub took a shortcut by sailing on a circular course within two miles of the North Pole. The Skate only needed to travel 12 miles to pass through all time zones.pic.twitter.com/Hi63YKwzjx

Brass: Need you to do a show of how far and how fast our new nuclear submarines can travel. I want you to hit as many time zones as you possibly can. 1950's Sub Captain: No problem, Sir. Gunna head a little north and I'll get back to you in an hour.

There’s an actual pole at the South Pole. I put one hand on it and went around and around and counted each circle as a trip around the world. I admit that it takes much longer at the Equator.

For a second this sounded impossible until I gave it a thought and then it made sense. Well Done Skate!
