    Today is . Flags such as these on USS Eisenhower in 1980 are a welcome site to sailors because they signal to "splice the mainbrace". Splicing the mainbrace initially granted the crew a double issue of rum, but for U.S. sailors it now means two cans of beer.

    The Resolution-class ballistic missile submarine HMS Repulse had an inauspicious start in 1967. After protesters delayed Repulse's launch, the sub slid into the channel and got stuck on a sandbank. Repulse remainded stranded until the next tide 12 hours later.
