The incredible history at Arne is still weaved into the landscape and wildlife there today - Many of the bombs that hit created what are now wildlife rich ponds supporting a huge range of species from small red damselflies to raft spiderspic.twitter.com/Xu7h4BDkSA

The RSPB first bought land at Arne in 1965 to safeguard heathland species such as the smooth snake, sand lizard and Dartford warbler. Today, the reserve covers more than 565 hectares of the Arne peninsular, providing a haven for many species across its patchwork of habitats.pic.twitter.com/SlP5w5Wl4x

Some weeks later, the population there were evacuated, and the much of the area was then used as a battle range to prepare for D-Day. After World War Two, the explosives factory was closed, and in the 90s the military left the site altogether.pic.twitter.com/hBGccXAdfc

The decoy worked well and helped to avert potential disaster at the factory on the night of the 3rd of June, but this left Arne completely devastated. 200 bombs fell in the area and fires would rage for weeks following this.pic.twitter.com/HZHqFUHGhv

In 1942, Arne was subject to a bombing raid which was targeting the Royal Naval Cordite Factory at Holton Heath. The vulnerability of the factory, which produced explosives, had been noted and so a fake factory was mocked up on Arne as a decoy.pic.twitter.com/bpYga0f0eL
