Animal a Day for 2019 Green bottle fly: or blow flies. Slightly larger than houseflies with metallic green colouration and transparent wings. Animal a Day for 2019 Goldfinch: one of many finch species in Ireland. Common at feeders. In the wild they feed on thistle & teasel seeds. Animal a Day for 2019 Collared dove: Becoming more common in suburban gardens. Adults have a black half-collar on the back of the neck. Animal a Day for 2019 Stoat: or ermine. Has a distinctive black tip to the tail. They are very agile and great climbers. Carnivores, they feed on rabbits and small rodents. Animal a Day for 2019 Moorhen: or waterhen. (Cearc uisce in Irish). Distinctive red & yellow beak and long green legs. Common on ponds, lakes & canals. Can be heard calling at night. Animal a Day for 2019 Lugworm: Common around our coastline. Rarely seen as they live buried beneath sand. However, their ‘casts’ betray their presence. The head is at the base of the burrow. Animal a Day for 2019 Horsefly: Also known as clegs. They have razor sharp teeth & cause a very painful bite.
