I emphatically disagree with most of this article, especially in the way it was presented. I deal with many PhDs students from around the world, and although some have difficulty dealing with failed experiments and rejection of papers etc. This is NOT the case for a large % 1/

I can tell you that a large % of the hardships faced by PhDs is in fact dealing with mediocre to terrible supervisors, who either just lack good management skills (which we know isn't taught) or who just outright treat their students terribly (personality). 2/

How about poor mentorship, lack of financial support, mental and physical illness, systemic racism and sexism, blatant harassment...? No, you're right. It's probably cuz we just don't fit.

This looks like an opinion piece, and sure, it's good to give everyone a voice, but also important to consider what message an article like this is giving to young people. Makes it sound like mainly it's their fault, while the problems are mainly due to systemic issues.

Inability to accept failure comes from lack of support when we fail, and the academic system making us believe we're less than *because* we fail. And let me tell you, if I wanted prestige, I'd have gone into something else. I chose to do physics because I love doing it.
