Woah. State regulators just announced that landlords (including NYC) must pay broker fees for real estate agents instead of prospective tenants. In case you don't live here - broker fees typically = 1-1.5x month's rent up front. It's insanity.

In Cleveland and New Orleans, county jail populations are shrinking, but deaths and abuse of incarcerated people continue. Ironically, decarceration may now be exposing the fundamental cruelty of incarceration itself. My latest for :

This a blistering, v. well-documented account of 's sycophancy to jail-builders by & Jarrod. Since the 1860s, NYT has extolled each new NYC jail—only to later decry it for its barbarism, while extolling its replacement in similar terms.

It's official, y'all. pardoned Ousman Darboe yesterday evening. I am still speechless and in awe of the relentless advocacy of the NYU Immigrant Rights Clinic (led by ) & eternally grateful to every single person who has supported Ousman's pardon application

Cop convicted of planting crack on innocent couple. Given probation. Judge “swayed by how he lost his job, pension, & health.” In other words, the same consequences for people I represent jailed on bail *before conviction* that no judge ever cares about.

People often disparage protestors by telling us to get a job. At JFK a driver yelled that at us during anti protest (that crowd seemed to me full of well-off professionals) I...don't understand. I'm sure most have jobs, or school, but why is that meant to validate us?

Nassau County cops are accused of beating up literal boy scouts. Nassau’s top cop denies the allegations but admits that the children were in custody for hours before their parents were contacted. NY’s GOP is loudest on bail reform but silent on this.

Everyone arrested at is now free. 🙌 Thanks to the jail support team, + legal observers, lawyers + Moira Meltzer Cohen. Jail support runs on people power, love, determination, and smarts to keep each other safe when in the hands of the state. Do it!
