I should add that there is absolutely incredible work being done in indigenous food sovereignty to counteract generations of commodity programs. My colleague/bff @bluefancyshawl works in these areas (along w/other amazing folks).

Same. and the "omg I had no idea!" crowd is weird too, and there's this strange undertone of "oh god we can't let this happen because then we'll be like the *Indians*" is hard to process as well.

Being native, most natives will be honest and say that being on commodities can be helpful but as for healthy. ...that's another story. I have seen families sell commodity foods just so they can buy fresh vegetables, fruits and meat that's not in a can.
