lol, despite the fact that PS3 version of GTA SA has a different save system (SYS-DATA), the game still tries to locate the old saves "GTASAsf#.b" in the root folder.

It is just a leftover from the mobile port, I guess. It stored the saves in the root folder.
After doing more research using my own PS3 and PS3 copy of the game, I can indeed say that there IS a reasonable explanation. If its your first time launching the game, it copies those files to where they actually belong. If I had to guess, San Andreas cant have missing ->
saves, and needs all 10 save slot files to exists even if empty. So there are several blank saves stored on disk for that purpose. You can prove this by placing real save files onto the disk and burn it. Delete all saves of San Andreas from your PS3. Load the game, there they are
