Carbon monoxide is a highly poisonous gas that is colorless, odorless, tasteless and virtually impossible to detect. If you suspect carbon monoxide is present in your home, go outside immediately and call 911. Do not return to your home until the carbon monoxide source is found.

Some of the coldest air of the season has settled in across New York City. If you're headed out, remember to layer up. Keep your fingers, earlobes and nose covered up. And don't forget to check on elderly relatives and neighbors.
A graphic showing how to dress in extremely cold weather with an illustration of a person and a dog. It says the person should wear a warm hat, face mask, scarf, 3 or more layers, gloves, 1-2 years, warm boots, thermal socks and then 1-2 layers and little boots on the dog.

Cold and frigid temperatures can affect the way gas travels making it seem like an odor is in one area when it’s in another. If you smell an odor of rotten eggs leave your home or building immediately. Take everyone with you, including pets.

Keep working flashlights and an extra supply of batteries in your home and be sure to keep all electronic devices charged during these bitter temperatures.

As temps drop across our region, remember: 🚫 NEVER use a gas range for heating or burn coal/charcoal in an enclosed space. 🚫 NEVER run a vehicle in the garage-even with the door open. CO can seep into your home. 🚫 NEVER operate a generator indoors. #ColdWeatherTips

Remember - always take caution when clearing snow and ice, stay at least 10 feet away from overhead power lines at all times, never pile cleared snow around vents, and when using generators, ensure they are operated outdoors to prevent the build up of carbon monoxide.

Massachusetts customers that remain without power are primarily in Gardner, Harvard, Hubbardston, Westminster & Winchester. We're seeing significant damage & access is impeded by uncleared roads in some areas. We expect to restore service to most customers by midnight tonight.
