I think reluctance to believe in extraterrestrial life is part of neoliberal "end of history" ism. If the universe is teeming with life we haven't yet found, but could, it suggests that neoliberal capitalism is not our peak but is in fact a very primitive early historical state.

I think this is why I see a lot of Silicon Valley types casting doubt on the existence of aliens. You might expect these space-loving rationalists to be into aliens, but aliens would actually prove that they are part of a primitive society rather than an advanced, unique one.

Capitalists are scared of aliens because they know they must be communists who have transcended material society in order to actually bring about higher reality. @GrantCameron says it best here:pic.twitter.com/otPnt27chG

I don't think it's that. I think that we've spent a lot of resources over the past ~50-80 years trying to find what (we think of as) evidence of technically-inclined life. So far, we can clock time based on Pulsar radio emissions, but we have no non-natural radio signals. 1/

If alien life followed anything remotely like our technical progression, they should (in some form) be detectable by radio telescopes and the like - even by the primitive gravity measurements we're capable of. 2/

I think Chomsky said the chances of other intelligent life are slim, pointing out that our planet has had the perfect conditions for life, yet we’re the only intelligent life

The speed of light is a universal maximum and space is vast. This is in short why we're likely never to interact with aliens. It would be cool as hell, but there's not much support for the idea. Doesn't have to do with ideology man.

I could have sworn there were instances where it was different. Anyways, until we figure out how to work in other dimensions we are probably gonna be stuck here for a while.

Or maybe they just paid attention in science class and understand that ETs existing isn't all that interesting unless they're in our solar system.
