The United States is the largest single provider of humanitarian assistance worldwide to people in need, including refugees, asylum seekers, internally displaced persons, stateless persons, and vulnerable migrants.

Education poses a threat to dogma, because those who are taught to think may start to wonder whether kings deserve their power. So there has long been a deeply anti-intellectual streak in conservatism, which sees a straight line from Enlightenment thought to the guillotine.

This is actually quite interesting, because the answer, as has written, is that it ISN'T recent. Conservative political philosophy is full of praise for "unthinking people" who accept traditional dogma rather than reasoning for themselves. currentaffairs.org/2022/11/why-co

We’ve finally finished it. This year is the 20th anniversary of the century’s worst crime, the Iraq war. Noam Chomsky and I have assembled a comprehensive retrospective on the criminal lies and atrocities, drawing on his research from across two decades:

Knowing fully that Iraq was not involved in 9/11, Bush nevertheless tried to convince the American public to believe in an Al-Qaeda-Hussein nexus, in hope that this would increase support for a war that lacked a credible justification.

They’re not locusts, they’re human beings. They’re not “swarming” the border, they’re crossing it. But “migrants cross border” doesn’t make for a news headline. So it has to be a “swarm.”

This is going to be very fun and hopefully quite helpful. I'm not going to teach people how to "own" and "destroy" people in Debate, but how to be effective at advancing a left political agenda and getting people on your side.

An unfortunate thing about online writing is there are strong incentives to come up with the most ludicrous takes imaginable so that people click on them. Compact Magazine now has "trans rights activists are soldiers for Big Pharma."

It would be strange, for instance, if the sexual abuse verdict hurt him. After all, before the 2016 election he bragged about committing sexual abuse. So anyone who voted for Trump before already knows that's something he does and they've decided they don't care.

One reason I'm not afraid of AI ruling us all is that it's a massive mistake to think "intelligence" translates into power. The existence of cops and monarchs proves there is an inverse relationship between wisdom and the ability to control.

Quote from @geoffreyhinton : "There are very few examples of a more intelligent thing being controlled by a less intelligent thing." Have you looked at your: Head of state? Elected representative? Pointy-haired boss? Pastor/rabbi/imam/guru? PhD advisor? Cat?

If Joe Biden loses to Trump, will Democrats show any regret for uniformly lining up behind Biden’s candidacy and ignoring all the polling showing he’s weak and disliked? Will they maybe wish they had held a competitive primary to find a better candidate?
