An unfortunate but significant development: A Korean woman caught the novel in Thailand, and returned to Korea, with no travel to China. This is problematic as if there are ++ chains of transmission out of China -> containment less likely

“...2019-nCoV Spike protein contains a 39 nucleotide...sequence insertion, which shares homology to fish genomic sequence of Myripristis murdjan, an abundant fish type in Indo-Pacific Ocean.“ This is getting silly now isn't it?

That's because it's not really about preprint vs publication, it's about /speed/. It's just that in addition to being speedy. biorxiv allows completely unsubstantiated ideas that would never pass peer review to get out into the public idea–and shape public thought.

Walking back errors is slow thankless work. Still dealing with it in Zika and I’m sure other fields have great examples. It’s very painful to see.

  8. Also, this is not just a pre-print thing, also seeing errors in the journals. Not an easy problem to fix in the era of "gotta get this out now!". Maybe some things can wait a few days 🤷‍♂️

  10. But I think that a discussion is needed to determine how to quickly vet the good from the bad before they blow up into crazy stories.

  11. let me be clear though, I support bioRxiv and lots of great things have come out of it during the outbreak. See 👇

  12. I think that it’s about time that we had The Talk about the role of bioRxiv during outbreaks. Some of this is so far out that individually they wont impact much, but collectively they are shaping the narrative. We wanted real-time results, but it comes with an accuracy trade-off.

Supporting your peers and being kind always accomplishes more than saying discriminatory remarks and being hostile. Would a similar reaction have happened if the outbreak originated in a European country? 🤔 Probably not. 2/2

It's incredibly unfortunate that a combination of misinformation and fear mongering during this coronavirus outbreak has fueled racism and xenophobia towards international students on UC campuses. 1/2

That paper claiming that an asymptomatic traveler from Shangai infected a business partner in Germany with the new coronavirus was wong! The woman did actually have symptoms, found out.

So, that paper we all reported on showing transmission of from an “asymptomatic case”? Well, it turns out the woman did have symptoms. Here’s what we know so far:

With every outbreak, there are always the “let’s freak out about our misunderstanding of virus evolution” narratives. I hope that nobody is actually listening to this guy.

This is a pretty interesting tidbit from the most recent report on . Not surprising - kinda sad, but definitely necessary. The R0 of misinformation is massively higher than the R0 of the virus.

On the novel : “It’s very, very transmissible, and it almost certainly is going to be a pandemic,” said Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease. “But will it be catastrophic? I don’t know.”
