We are working on a convenient way for you to test and reuse our Godot character models. They're just the skins, ready to copy into your game and snap to a character controller. We'll open-source this within the next few months. Made in Godot 4.0 by

Godot 4 is also a great game engine to make 2D games. We're not forgetting those of you who still want to do 2D. and are working on a pixel platformer demo to show you how to code all kinds of moves and mix high res shaders and pixel art graphics.

Note that we're testing Godot 4's SDFGI in different settings on purpose, because it's the new solution for open world games in Godot 4 (we don't have the budget to make large open worlds yet so we're testing it with smaller scenes).

So what's happening with these scenes is the one on the right, we could make it look close to the one on the left. Godot 4 gives us more control. The one on the left, we can't make it look like the one on the right, unfortunately.

I see that a bunch of you prefer the left one. Understandably so, it has a particular vibe. The thing is, GI shouldn't give you these black gradients in corners. This can look good and it's fine if you add it yourself in post-processing, but it limits realism a lot.

There's a bit of light leak in corners with the default settings. We'll tweak them to try and fix that. In Godot 3, with global illumination you get this blackness, some ambient occlusion tones lose saturation, some materials get blown up, and you have blotches in some areas.

Some people said, "you're copying Mario" and yes, for this open-source character controller, we've made the mini-level like a part of Whompus Fortress to test the character. But my heart goes to Kirby! Now all that's left is to have Sophia hop onto the star and fly away.

What I like most about 3D in Godot 4 is that default settings are better all around. You don't have to fiddle with sliders to get things to look good, just put a light, turn on shadows, change the sky color, and it looks great.

The default cast shadows and sky in 4.0 (left) VS Godot 3.5 (right) are so much better. It's one of the many 3D limitations Godot 4 addresses. This is default lighting, no global illumination (light bounces) or post-processing effects. Video coming soon!

You've seen the 3D third-person and platformer controllers for Godot 4. We're preparing them for a release in the near future. A lot is going on in building new infrastructure at GDQuest, the switch to Godot 4 will take time, but it's on the way.

At the time of writing, there's a display bug with coupons *before* checkout, but if you click "checkout", you'll see the correct total price (before payment). I've reported the bug to , the company behind the platform, and it should hopefully be fixed soon.

I'm *not* talking about biases or other issues here. It's completely valid to have a good number of major concerns with AI. I have my fair share too. But I have to admit, as a gamedev tutor, I'm very impressed by how it can assist devs, teachers, and students.

This one critique comes back in different forms, and I find it interesting when AI starts to do better than most people and content. In my field at least, code, it easily beats many content creators and tutors in terms of pedagogy and accuracy.

An interesting critique of AI assistants is that they make mistakes and can tell you false information. It's true. But the web, StackOverflow answers, blogs, and videos are full of false information. And finding correct sources of information takes a lot of work and know-how.

So one thing you can do that's really impressive is, say the AI explains something, and you don't understand one bit. You can ask about that bit, and it'll build upon the explanation. You can branch out in the conversation, and it'll remember previous context.

I asked it to remind me of how to solve differential equations, how to write an arena allocator in C, to tell me what were common things you guys struggled with when learning Godot, and so on, and everything was just very good. Every time.

This ChatGPT AI is the first text AI assistant that really blows my mind. It's great at making suggestions, generating ideas, understanding your requests, teaching you things, or even just writing. It does all of that better than many professionals...
