The notion that the GOP tax bill will become way more popular once people see they're getting a tax cut seems naive to me.

The cuts the bill provides to the middle class are modest, and temporary. They're also confusing—not a straightforward slashing of rates, and some popular deductions will go away. The cuts for corporations are massive and permanent, by contrast.

People don't know that much about the details of the bill. It may become more popular, around the margin, when they see less withheld from their paycheck. But voters are going by heuristics—they think "this bill isn't designed to help people like me". I doubt that will change.

I doubt it will change because: (i) the GOP and Trump aren't trusted on these issues; (ii) public opinion has a status quo bias & dislikes disruptions to the system; (iii) the public is basically right—this *isn't* the bill you'd design to help the middle class.

When I've tweeted about it, most of the pro-bill responses have come down to, "Well, it's cutting MY taxes." Anecdote, sample size, etc.

As a rule, based on the #Conservatives I know and have spoken to, self-interest, even at the knowing expense of others, is a "virtue". Their ethics boil down to: "I got mine, you go get yours even though I intend to actively prevent you from doing so."

Ow, what a tough situation! Maybe it's a 'Burgh thing (I know it's not really), because my parents and most of my aunts and uncles are also blatantly this way, all born, raised, and never left Western PA.

Not denying that much of PA has become Pennsyltucky but I'd say the bulk of people I know are just a bit more worldly and socially conscious, thinking beyond personal gain, especially if it's at the expense of someone less fortunate.

I wonder if western PA is at all surprised or taken aback by at least the tone of #TrumpsAmerica if not by the policies. I know #Trump voters who “just wanted to shake things up”, like a reality show in search of ratings. I’m guessing they weren’t expecting we’d be living in one.

I'm not sure. My father considers Trump a "Grade A asshole" (his words), yet *happily* voted for him. My mother is sickened by the tone, but insists, "It would have been worse under Hillary."

I can’t imagine how, with the massive corporate giveaway that is the #GopTaxScam, anyone could make the case that Hillary would have been *more* cozy with Wall Street. Thus the only conclusion that makes sense is that many just believed ANY man was a better leader than any woman.

It will cut MY taxes, but an extra $2500 a year isn't worth $1.5 trillion in extra debt for my kids to worry about. Unless we really see 4+% growth I won't be coming around.

This is basically how I feel. Yeah, it helps me balance my books next year, but I'd prefer not to have this windfall. And we all know that 4%+ growth is a fantasy.

@GOP thinks voters are stupid enough to believe wages will be raised out of a sense of benevolence by business owners. That never happened & makes zero sense. They're counting on small take home increases being enough to satisfy voters & then push social security & Medicare cuts

Once the average taxpayer inherits 20 million dollars they're going to love this bill.

My wife and I can expect about $30 extra per paycheck, which will go to service our student loans. Meanwhile, we can look forward to our Social Security & Medicare benefits being decreased before we retire in 35 years--the GOP's next planned move. Not even close to worth it.

Won't that get eaten by increased healthcare premiums because they cut the mandate? Insurance companies have said that if this passes, expect a 10% increase.

Yep, good point. Thankfully I think my employer already negotiated our 2018 insurance plan costs, but I'm sure those costs will go up with the mandate repeal.
