    This is obvious I guess but the see-saw patterns in COVID cases in the US and other countries make me think that the overall degree of conscientiousness matters a lot. Cases go down, people relax. Cases go up, people take more precautions.

        The difference in the states is that cases never went down to anything approaching zero.

        What's happened in Europe is mostly people getting fed up and wanting to socialize again. And it burns us, every single time.

        Add to that cooler weather, so more indoors interaction, and, certainly in the UK, university return. Massive spikes within our student population which inevitably starts to leak out into the wider community.

        Two models - China and then SK/NZ/Japan/Taiwan for successfully squelching the virus spread. Everything else is pretty much degrees of failure.
