People are not understanding the extent to which their perceptions of reality are being shaped by relatively arbitrary design choices made in charts like these.

Thank you for saying that Nate. I’ve been telling everyone charts that compare based on total count when you’re comparing a country that’s 10 X bigger than another country just doesn’t make any sense at all
-
This is a case when adjusting for population is not a good idea, we should be watching the total graph because otherwise we would be darkening the exponential nature of a highly contagious disease.

Don't oversell population as the only controlling variable. Population density matters too when evaluating the effectiveness of policy in controlling the spread of this virus.
-
I don’t think US size is all that relevant to tracking the virus. We are more like several smaller outbreaks emanating from major int’l (esp Asian) ports of entry - NYC, SFO, SEA, LAX, CHI, MIA, ATL with pop density major determinant from each

I'd put 0 in it. There have been reports that officials in Wuhan have been handing out the ashes of 500 cremated virus victims per day to relatives.

Serious question: why adjust for population? Urban areas are getting hit hard and the number of people who live in relatively calm areas should factor into the total death count of a country.
-
*should not factor in
