Also, while lots of ventures shift focus pre-launch, you'd think being crowdfunded would lead to more vigorous efforts to follow through on the spirit of your mission as reasonably understood by donors/members (not to mention by employees and "ambassadors").
There needs to be more legal accountability in regards to crowdfunded money. It’s too big of a thing now for there not to be larger reprocussions for entities that raise money under false pretenses, whether it be a company, NGO, individual, etc.
As a contributor to The Correspondent, my reaction was: I saw two goals an 1) independent, non-corporate journalism and 2) a new American editorial viewpoint. The switch - and in my view it was a switch - torpedoed #2. Arguably the less significant goal, but less than promised.
Are you frustrated that they spent $1.8mm (in gifted money) to power a crowdfunding campaign focused on Americans and then acquired only $1.6mm in membership contributions from Americans? At least on Kickstarter or GoFundMe, there are at times mechanisms to demand a refund for your contribution. In this case, I assume they just burned a bunch of people who pledged for future contributions too.
