Nobody has the slightest idea whether trying to impeach him will increase his chances of re-election.

I like data analyst Nate way more than pundit Nate.

Agreed. This is one of those rare cases where it's OK to... (•_•) ( •_•)>⌐■-■ (⌐■_■) discrimiNate

This implies that this all exists in a vacuum and doesn't allow for the possibility that impeachment proceedings could catalyze new narratives.
-
I'm not saying that's what will definitively happen, but it seems naive to believe that today's polling on impeachment will stay constant - for better or worse - over the course of the process itself.
-
This is the type of argument to which nate refers; on one hand you have empirical data that impeachment is unpopular, on the other is wishful thinking that folks will change their mind. They might, but it's a poor argument.
-
I'm just taking issue with the stance of "this will materially increase Trump's chances of winning" as a definitive statement. As a data-based prediction, sure.

Nate, please point me to these people who support Dems or are anti-Trump, but will immediately change course if Democrats impeach. Sounds like a boogeyman to me. Impeachment unpopular, sure, but let’s get the facts to the public first. Methinks Democrats are just stockholmed.

Yeah but as a voter I don’t care what you think will help you get a president of your party elected. It’s not the House’s job to get a president elected. Do your actual job and keep the president in check.
-
I’m personally more likely to abandon both parties if the democrats do nothing and prove to the public they also can’t be trusted to do what they are elected to do. I’d rather they try and either fail or realize they are wrong. At least they will have done their due diligence.

do you have any data that backs up why you think it would materially increase his chances of re-election?

I don’t understand the idea of tip-toeing around racists and morons in order to protect democracy. Dems should be boldly seeking justice at every turn and let that be the thing that decides our fate.

Not sure if it helps him, but I see your point.
-
It does not help him, and I can't believe anyone believes it does. Trump wants all the coverage of his corruption to go away, and impeachment ensures that it doesn't. Public opinion is malleable, and impeachment is a major opportunity to shift public opinion in our favor.
-
Impeaching Bill Clinton boosted his poll numbers. It happens.
-
It boosted his poll numbers because people saw through the GOP's bullshit rationale for impeachment. You cannot "Both sides!" the political climate surrounding Bill Clinton and the political climate surrounding Donald Trump, whose corruption is extensive.
-
We could impeach him and he might still win in 2020. His supporters don’t give a damn.
-
Impeachment isn’t about convincing his cultists. It’s about getting his corruption out in front of persuadeables. And then once it’s obvious to everyone what a criminal he is, it’s about making the republicans go on the record refusing to convict in the face of damning evidence.
-
Ok, then what? We run against him in 2020. You’re saying that holding impeachment hearings will help us then; I’m not sure that it will.
