There's a llllllllooooooottt of not-terribly-persuasive attempts by some Democrats #OnHere to rationalize away the fact that launching impeachment proceedings against Trump is a really unpopular move.

If we only ever do things that we're sure will work out in the near-to-medium term, what's the fucking point? Some things we should do just because they're the right thing to do.

Maybe, just maybe, we could expect them to impeach because it is their duty under the Constitution, even if it’s not politically popular. Imagine doing something solely because it’s the right thing to do...

Hey man what percentage of people thought Nixon should be impeached beforehand
-
Like 47% thought he should be impeached right before he was, which is about 10% lower than Trump.
-
Except that Nixon was not impeached.
-
No he wasn't, he resigned before the shame of making congress fully follow through was necessary.

Yeah, look at how much Gore won the presidency by after Bill was impeached.... oh wait...

More and more,
@NateSilver538 demonstrates the perils of polling. He's too often trapped in the house of mirrors that polling creates. He's become a high priest of polling prophecy, and like all other priests, the cult becomes the arbiter of its own truths. -
It is worse than that. This is willful self-deception in an attempt to continue peddling failed model and business imo. Come out from Plato's Cave.
-
Well put! Plato's Cave indeed.

The integrity of our democracy is more important than any poll or any one election.

Nixon 42% approval for hearings at first? Not great either. So they do not do their constitutional oversight duty based on polls?

You can ignore the people trying to game theory it in weird ways, sure, but I once again think you're also dismissing people who are looking at it purely as a moral or ethical responsibility to punish wrongdoing by a branch of the federal government.
-
Sometimes the right thing to do is not the popular thing to do.

Where is your data on this?

The longer game is only political in the sense that impeachment is the sole way to create moral hazard for those who wish to rig democracy and benefit from the rigging.

Literally the last time there was an impeachment trial. In '98 64% of the electorate disapproved of impeachment. Repubs won in 2000, 2002, 2004. How is this not relevant?
-
Gore won the popular vote. Then 9-11 happened. The 2002 & 2004 elections were more about that than Clinton’s impeachment.
-
And that's the point. Other stuff is going to happen, but the GOP was absolutely not harmed by impeaching the president. At. All.
