People are welcome to engage in as much special pleading or 13-dimensional-chess-thinking as they want. But empirically, it's rare that when Party X takes an action that polls as being highly unpopular, it #actually turns out well for them politically in the near-to-medium term.
Popularity != morality.
Other things that didn’t poll well until Dems made folks reckon with them: ACA, immigration reform, gay marriage.

Unpopular? I live in frikkin' Kentucky and pretty much everyone I know wants the hearings to begin last week. They didn't file articles of impeachment against Nixon until they'd had months of hearings, that's the way it's supposed to work. Instead the Dems went on vacation.
lmao bro what, kentucky? do you realize that we socialize with like minded people, so obviously a lot of people you know support impeachment, but look at actual numbers. Majority in the country don't support impeachment, and kentucky is much redder than USA is overall.
Hmmm, didn't read my post closely, did you? The Congress had hearing after hearing on Watergate before articles of impeachment were filed against Nixon. I think there's a lot of conflation between impeaching right this second and pursuing hearings, including from @NateSilver538
Impeachment happens *after* impeachment hearings because OF COURSE THE PUBLIC NEEDS TO APPROVE OF IT!
