FWIW, I had the same impression as @zainabshah: that they were "coming to the US". That can mean a lot of things; I don't care about a physical office. But an English-language expansion run from abroad with just 1-2 US correspondents isn't what I thought I was getting behind.
Maybe my impression is/was wrong. But their first/only US-based hire (@zainabshah) had same impression. FWIW, I also communicated this to them privately a few weeks ago. I hope they'll find a better way to address people's concerns rather than just calling it a misunderstanding.
Well that's some bullshit. I got behind the funding campaign early on, and every single part of their marketing and emails and job listings strongly implied the idea was to open a US office. Maybe it wasn't premeditated, but it's definitely wrong to say they never made the claim.
Interested in what David Simon, also an ambassador, has to say about this. As I recall, he's a huge fan of journalism being done by out-of-towners and even wrote the 5th season of "The Wire" as a paean to it.
They are so sketchy. Have they paid their freelancers yet?
If Shah was this scared of coming forward with the truth, maybe the US version would've sucked anyway. Basic journalistic integrity. Instead she was 100% prepared to let these scumbags get away with this deception. Grosses me out all around.
In the email they sent announcing the office will remain in NL, they said 40% of their English language backers were in the US. If they don't do a good job covering the US then I expect many of those members will leave pretty quickly, myself included.
Obvious what happened. They made more in the capitol campaign then thought. Amsterdam saw the cash & thought they need it there instead of in the US. This is a management problem of pressure from within. They unwound the publicized deal. So another press office w/o integrity
They also did squeeze an *awful* lot of juice – funding, ambassadorial support – out of the somewhat gauzy promise of "unbreaking news." Trustworthy, solutions journalism that doesn't blindly pivot to every wrinkle? Not quite a cottage industry. But there are existing purveyors.
