I have quite a few different thoughts on this. 1) People inside the bubble (includes Ezra & me) have difficulty understanding what people hear outside the bubble. That's a challenging problem. Our gut impressions are often way wrong. It's good to validate against external data.https://twitter.com/ezraklein/status/1113555867213819904 …

Is this a joke? The Pete surge is completely media-driven. The fawning profiles, gushing tributes by media personalities, all within a space of 3-4 weeks.
-
He's actually not getting that much media attention, comparatively. Nate just tweeted about that 4 hours ago
-
Highlighting general coverage that doesn't factor in the nature of such coverage - overwhelmingly positive - and how it's acting as a self-perpetuating narrative in Pete's case, doesn't reflect the truth of the situation.
-
While it is self-perpetuating, I'd say that's kind of unavoidable. Cover a candidate, they get more popular, cover them because they're growing, repeat. It's the result of talking about a candidate for getting more popular, which I'd say is a good thing to talk about. (1/2)
-
Also I'd argue that the initial spark that resulted in him growing in popularity so much was his town hall, which is fundamentally different from the NYTimes or someone writing about how he's having a moment for the 15th time, as it was just him saying his message
-
A lot of candidates have had good town halls. Ask them how it's gone since then when the media attention turned away. The media have given Mayor Pete sustained, effusive coverage that has fuelled his campaign. The vetting has also been non-existent for the most part.
-
Fair, though his town hall was unique in how popular it was. Admittedly my source is Socialblade Twitter growth numbers, which are an imperfect way to measure growth in support, but based on those numbers his townhall was far more popular at the very beginning than others

Genuine interest from people is perfectly compatible with being media-driven. People would be genuinely interested in a lot of candidates if they got
#PeteButtigieg’s coverage.#Trump was media-driven; it allowed him to connect with those who’d like him.https://twitter.com/NateSilver538/status/1113563871002935298 … -
Journalists started covering
#PeteButtigieg because they thought the whole thing was cute — young, attractive, married gay man, mayor of a small city in the Midwest, thinks he should be president. Cute! No reason for -us- to think he should be president; the press didn’t care. -
If the press takes a candidate seriously, some portion of the public will, too. How many other people with minimal qualifications could catch on if only they got magazine profiles and national town halls? Not everyone; but quite a few.

And Beto's isnt organic? Cause it sure isn't the media based on the shade being thrown at him from every network and newspaper.

You had me on this thread until your conclusion. There was a ton of media coverage on my timelines. Much more than Warren or Kamala Harris. Even pushed Beto aside. Again. Impressionistic.
-
Also. I don’t have cable so that’s out of my impression-alysis.

Re Buttigieg. Organic for sure. First saw him on Colbert a while back. My first reaction was, I like this guy. Articulate, thoughtful, comfortable in his own skin. He speaks in complete sentences--even paragraphs, i.e. he can hold a reasoned train of thought. Refreshing.
-
Didn't you just provide the opposite evidence to
@NateSilver538 argument? All you have seen him is how he presents himself in the media. Then MSNBC, then CNN. If this were not media-generated, what don't know what. -
How else is the average person going to learn of someone except through the media? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Most of the people complaining on here about
@PeteButtigieg have some other candidate they already love. And he is peeing on their parade.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

Agree, it's organic. His message has broad appeal. He has taken freedom and faith back from the republicans and his focus on every day life (Joyce reference) and lived experiences is resonating with a decent cross section of the US. And he's so damn calming.

Lol. He's being fawned over and slobbered over by cable news types & he's become the cause celeb for white gay men. So spare me the pseudo analysis, you're better than that.
