I have quite a few different thoughts on this. 1) People inside the bubble (includes Ezra & me) have difficulty understanding what people hear outside the bubble. That's a challenging problem. Our gut impressions are often way wrong. It's good to validate against external data.https://twitter.com/ezraklein/status/1113555867213819904 …

This is interesting, but I think cable news and newspaper coverage are now lagging indicators of digital, Twitter, and podcast coverage. If you asked me what's more influential in the Democratic primary, the LA Times or Pod Save America, I'd choose Pod Save in a second. https://twitter.com/NateSilver538/status/1113525752153161729 …

      2. Almost all media is now niche media. Lots of seemingly popular/influential news products have audiences of only 10s or 100s of thousands of people or low 7 figures at most. That's not a lot in a country of 327 million people. That makes media analysis harder than it once was.

      3. There are a lot of very complicated feedback loops between and among "the audience" and "the media". It's hard to know who is influencing who. The causality is difficult to tease out. It's especially difficult in the primaries, where "party elites" also play a role.

      4. Media tracking metrics could be a lot better and a lot more standardized. 5. A lot of what's branded as *descriptive* analysis about the media ("candidate X isn't getting enough coverage") would be better as prescriptive analysis ("candidate X *should* get more coverage").

      6. In general, in cases where person X makes a claim without data, and person Y provides some reasonable data that contradicts the claim, I think burden is on person X to provide better data to counter Y's claim. There are exceptions to this, e.g. when Y is arguing in bad faith.

      7. News organizations should think more deliberately *and communicate with their readers* about how they decide to allocate coverage between the candidates. I'm not sure 538 has always done a great job with this, but you can see some of our thinking there:https://53eig.ht/2OtapTJ

      8. Subject to all the caveats and limitations above, of the various candidates I've covered, the Buttigieg surge feels pretty darn organic and not especially media-driven. People are genuinely interested in him to an extent that's surprised me.

Is this a joke? The Pete surge is completely media-driven. The fawning profiles, gushing tributes by media personalities, all within a space of 3-4 weeks.

He's actually not getting that much media attention, comparatively. Nate just tweeted about that 4 hours ago

Highlighting general coverage that doesn't factor in the nature of such coverage - overwhelmingly positive - and how it's acting as a self-perpetuating narrative in Pete's case, doesn't reflect the truth of the situation.

While it is self-perpetuating, I'd say that's kind of unavoidable. Cover a candidate, they get more popular, cover them because they're growing, repeat. It's the result of talking about a candidate for getting more popular, which I'd say is a good thing to talk about. (1/2)

Also I'd argue that the initial spark that resulted in him growing in popularity so much was his town hall, which is fundamentally different from the NYTimes or someone writing about how he's having a moment for the 15th time, as it was just him saying his message

A lot of candidates have had good town halls. Ask them how it's gone since then when the media attention turned away. The media have given Mayor Pete sustained, effusive coverage that has fuelled his campaign. The vetting has also been non-existent for the most part.

Fair, though his town hall was unique in how popular it was. Admittedly my source is Socialblade Twitter growth numbers, which are an imperfect way to measure growth in support, but based on those numbers his townhall was far more popular at the very beginning than others

Genuine interest from people is perfectly compatible with being media-driven. People would be genuinely interested in a lot of candidates if they got #PeteButtigieg’s coverage. #Trump was media-driven; it allowed him to connect with those who’d like him.https://twitter.com/NateSilver538/status/1113563871002935298 …

Journalists started covering #PeteButtigieg because they thought the whole thing was cute — young, attractive, married gay man, mayor of a small city in the Midwest, thinks he should be president. Cute! No reason for -us- to think he should be president; the press didn’t care.

If the press takes a candidate seriously, some portion of the public will, too. How many other people with minimal qualifications could catch on if only they got magazine profiles and national town halls? Not everyone; but quite a few. #petebuttigieg #democrats #election2020
