Not trying to make today Nate Dunks On Ezra's Horse Race Takes Day, but Buttigieg has not been getting very much coverage. Even last week, he was just 7th in cable news coverage, trailing candidates such as Warren, Booker and Klobuchar. https://53eig.ht/2uIswfp https://twitter.com/ezraklein/status/1113521649515528192 …

There's a lot of enthusiasm about Pete Buttigieg out there, but there's also fair questions about why this guy polling in low single-digits is getting so much coverage. I think it’s good for journalists to be transparent about this stuff, so here's a thread on it.

In fact, there's a pretty good argument that Buttigieg has been undercovered, relative to more organic metrics such as Google search interest and fundraising, and that the coverage is somewhat belatedly catching up to the demand. It's not entirely unlike Bernie in early/mid 2015.

Even if you ignore that Buttigieg was getting very little coverage until recently and look at polls (not fundraising), his coverage NOW is still quite proportionate. Among the declared candidates, he's 7th in recent cable TV coverage & 8th in newspaper coverage, but 6th in polls.pic.twitter.com/ljM1KLdDn6

@AndrewYang ranks last in coverage but 8th in polling. That's the real news. Town hall + debates will see a spike in the polls.

He's getting buzz on Twitter (and off) because he's a compelling speaker that makes people feel good and included when they listen to him. You listen to Pete, and see GOP reaction and you realize there just might be a way out of this partisan shitstorm we've been in.

@AndrewYang does the same thing. He wants to put trust back into the conversation. Trust ourselves to make the best decision for #yourfamily #myfamily #theirfamily. Easiest way to do that is put $1000 in the hands of every citizen every month. Worth a look. #yanggang

And coverage covers ALL coverage, right? Remember the article written criticizing Buttigieg? Me either. Biden, Beto, Bernie may be getting more press, but what’s their ratio of positive to negative? I think this matters too.

It's pretty clear from the data that Yang and Castro aren't getting enough coverage, and that Gillibrand is getting way too much.

Gillibrand not only polls poorly, but doesn't seem to be offering novel policy proposals that would justify outsized coverage. Maybe attributable to national media's pro-east coast/Senate bias.

I'm guessing it's going to self-correct by the time the debates start happening. Gillibrand's poll performance is so ghastly right now that she's never going to raise any big donor money unless she has a breakthrough moment. And she'll never win with small donors.

There’s so much more to be said than these numbers would suggest though— both in terms of 1) what constitutes coverage (e.g., traditional forms of media vs. social media) and 2) how that coverage is being framed.

Kamala Harris places third by that metric, but you’d find me hard pressed to believe that if looking at, say, tweets on Twitter. That’s especially notable when considering how she objectively outperformed most other candidates in terms of fundraising this quarter

(even as Buttigieg was labeled as “the first winner,” to quote a Hill article— and one that didn’t even mention Harris whatsoever at that.) To me that seems problematic.
