So, this is a pretty strong consensus. "Liberal" and "left" shouldn't be treated as synonyms, at least in the context of Democratic politics.pic.twitter.com/NJqSgg8wkh

FWIW, I've tried to be careful about making this distinction in my recent writings, and we'll try to do so going forward at 538 (cc: @micahcohen). Most major media outlets still use "left" and "liberal" interchangeably, so that's something to watch out for if you care about this.

If you have a more global audience left probably helps in that regard too. Here in England liberal evokes centralist libdems or neoliberalism of Thatcher, in Australia the liberals are the right wing party.

I never understood why Americans insist on using the word „liberal“ wrong. Left/right and liberal/authoritarian are two orthogonal concepts In other countries parties with „Liberal“ in the name tend to lean to the right on economic issues. Lot of left parties are not liberal

Re why Americans use liberal to mean center-left (& not laissez faire economics): I read an article once it started in the 1930s to replace "progressive" which had an image prob following the failure of Prohibition. Meanwhile "left" obv sounded too Bolshevic for New Dealers.

But the wording of the Q was flawed. If it had read "In a MORE liberal direction" you might have seen a different result. (I would've then seen them as closer.) All Dems already ARE on the liberal spectrum, so DSA can only push them MORE left or in a MORE liberal direction.

People who whink communism is good cannot push anyone in a more liberal direction. Communism is inherently anti-liberal.

I think people just preferred the grammar of the chosen alternative. "In a liberal direction" is clumsy prose. To get a valid answer you need a sentence in which the words "liberal" and "left" are the options and fit equally well into the sentence.

With all due respect, how do you not know this? Is ignorance of this divide widespread within the media? How do you guys reconcile the ideological differences between someone like Obama and Evo Morales?
