What should a good epistemology do? Maximize true beliefs? Minimize false beliefs? Optimize true/false beliefs in some other way? Maximize useful beliefs? Maximize coherence? Optimize accuracy vs compression? Keep you in good standing with your main social groups? Other?

Interesting. I don’t know enough people who are interested in epistemology, clearly. Hey, @NateMeyvis, is this is well-formed question, or does it just appear like one to a phil dummy (me)?

Yes, it is! With a rich tradition behind it. Some sources: (i) Pyrrhonian skeptics (really into avoiding false belief!) (ii) Socrates (iii) William James, _The Will to Believe_ (iv) lots of modern work from Bayesians, though I don't know this literature well. [1/N]

Also, one idea that was very important in the ancient world, and that I think is important now / a lot of people implicitly recognize, but that a lot of contemporary philosophy misses, is that we should aim not only at good beliefs but also good explanations. [3/N]

Actually I briefly mentioned this recently, at the end of a discussion of temporal bias: https://www.natemeyvis.com/writing/on-temporal-bias/ … [4/N]

For a lot of ancients, belief itself was inherently deficient, and to be replaced by some combination of (i) suspension of judgment, (ii) hypothesis, (iii) various kinds of knowledge, some of which are more like "grasping explanations" than "taking true things to be true." [5/N]

Anyway, let me know if you want more references etc. Good questions! [6/6]
