Do kids who grow up outside the 13 British colonies have a different mentality about the American Revolution? I always found it natural to wonder stuff like “would I have been a patriot or a loyalist” but maybe that doesn’t make much sense if you’re in 3rd grade in Arizona.

Interesting. I remember spending a ton of time on the revolution and feeling like the 20th century got short shrift. I don't think we even breathed on Vietnam until I was in 11th grade. Then again I was in one of those original colonies!

Some of this is a function of mid-20th c. curriculums, which placed the civil war at the middle of Am history, used WW2 as a obvious modern anchor, and divided up material accordingly. By the 80s, this was all out of date, but the only addition was often a little civil rights.
