Puns are an intuition pump because they force you to come up with a plausible way to connect unrelated concepts, and when it's good it's one you otherwise wouldn't have thought of.

Related, I worked with a junior guy in finance who kept getting writeups returned by his boss with the comment "JUSTIFY" in the margins. So he rewrote, and made it a lot better, and got back "JUSTIFY" again. Eventually his boss explained that he meant "don't left-align text."

Reminds me a bit of hanging out with smart-slacker crowds in college; people were always doing harder exercises than they needed to by following the letter of the assignment as opposed to the explanation of it that had been given in whatever class / section they'd missed.
