I haven't listened to the interview yet but I did read your blog post. Seems to me rap music and its cousin spoken word belong on this list.
Yes, hip-hop / rap is the great counterexample here. Thank heavens. But there's still (to me) a major mystery about what happened to musicality everywhere else.

(I don't think it's a coincidence that hip-hop is also [IMO] much, *much* better and more vibrant than most other contemporary American cultural outputs.)

My perspective is hopelessly skewed by being in Baltimore/DC area, but my sense is that events billed as poetry readings/slams are disproportionately black. This *seemed* to be true even in Boston, with "disproportionately" being an important qualifier there :-)
