I haven't listened to the interview yet but I did read your blog post. Seems to me rap music and its cousin spoken word belong on this list.

Yes, hip-hop / rap is the great counterexample here. Thank heavens. But there's still (to me) a major mystery about what happened to musicality everywhere else.

My experience of learning about poetry in 'high school' is that we learnt all about expression and none about form or other technical aspects. I don't enjoy much poetry because I don't have these rails to guide me.

I think there’s a comparable trend in the frequency of literary allusions in nonfiction. That seems squarely due to non-focality.

I'd speculate it's because the average person writes more and speaks less than they used to, and so has less immediate feedback on whether their words are pleasing (musical) to the listener.
