Another candidate is resolving cognitive dissonance. The more you invest in something, the more your brain convinces itself that thing is worthwhile, because why else would you have invested in it?

When you’re in the middle of a long book and hit a spot that you are not connecting with do you stop reading, skip that part, or power through?
-
Depends how much I like the book. Skipping is very rare unless it's a less linear structure of book (e.g., Cambridge Companion to English Poetry, which I like very much but skip parts of). Default is power through but I'm very willing to abandon.

The only thing I think you are missing is that someone who writes a long book has a lot to 'say'. Anyone can come up with a premise, it is the great authors that can come up with a premise that they can follow through.
