Whats your suggested way to learn it? I am stuck using it from time to time, but its always a little rough....

Whatever your favorite environment that offers Vim keybindings is, use them there for a while. It's fine to spend most of your time in insert mode at first, switching to normal mode only for a few high-value commands. Those commands don't require the actual Vim program.
