I find it fascinating how much people seem to enjoy giving others parenting advice. What explains this?https://twitter.com/simonsarris/status/1276627369093140481 …

I asked for advice mostly because I had no confidence that I’d learned anything especially useful by being parented or when occasionally seeing other parents in action. The tradition is hollowed out, parenting books etc rush to fill the void, nothing really does.

Now a few years into it when I listen to ppls parenting ideas it is mostly a form of respect apart from actually wanting or needing tips

respect is on target I think: giving advice makes people feel recognized as parents.

Pamela is as usual on point. My first instinct is that people feel worry, regret, and insecurity about parenting, and giving advice makes them feel a bit better, if only temporarily.
