I grew up in Newton and enjoyed tromping around Echo Bridge and Hemlock Gorge as a teenager (and still do as an adult when I go back). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Echo_Bridge … As well as the Newton-side shoreline downstream as far as Washington St.
If you live within 100 miles of Boston, please tell me about a cool local place I might not already know about. (It doesn't need to be toddler-friendly, but if it is, I'd be grateful if you said so.)

If that looks appealing I also suggest stopping in Waban Square nearby: 1) Lunch at Barry’s Deli. 2) Waban Library Center in a quaint 90-year-old building. <https://www.wabanlibrarycenter.org > 3) Playground at Angier School. 4) Literally where I grew up. There’s no plaque, alas. :-)
