I also think that, without becoming a maniacal chess parent, there is a whole lot of value in encouraging that interest and letting him go deeper, explore different angles, etc. I had _deep_ and _long_ intellectual experience with games that I didn't soon get anywhere else.
And I'm grateful for that. I vividly remember going to the library and seeing a thick book about opening bids at bridge. "This much, just about the opening bid?!" But how was I to know how deep intellectual inquiry can go and just how fine-grained the world is?

So, while I'm all about diversity of experience, I also wouldn't recommend being in any kind of hurry to _replace_ your kid's interest in chess with other game-playing interests.
