I assume yes, but you've read Predictably Irrational? there's a good anecdote about gift giving vs. cash in there.

I have not (though I have the sense I've absorbed some of the material in interviews, through other behavioral psych / econ material, etc.). Thanks for the reference!

I’ve read these 3 times — they get better each time. Told in Tolstoyan style, it’s a sweeping portrait of all levels of a society consumed with its intrigues, affairs, rivalries, but which is headed for ruin. Plus, a lead character is a compulsive gambler.https://www.washingtonpost.com/entertainment/books/the-transylvanian-trilogy-by-miklos-banffy/2013/12/10/c9aa2d1c-5d2d-11e3-bc56-c6ca94801fac_story.html …

Thank you! (FWIW I still have a copy of _The Conspiracy_ in this office, staring at me, telling me to read it, and also often reminding me of you.)

Nothing in that thread is wrong, but I think comparing cash to a thoughtful gift from a close friend misses the point. The VAST majority of gifts given at holiday season are generic and obligatory (gift cards, candles, etc.) Good SNL on this subject: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_L5Xkb78KxY …

Anyway, your real question was what to read. Salvage the Bones and/or Sing, Unburied, Sing by Jesmyn Ward. Read descriptions of each, see which appeals more, then hopefully you'll want to read the other anyway after you read one.
