“Including” Afro-Latinos in ‘In The Heights’ is not about charity or thoughtfulness or even “diversity.” It’s literally about accuracy. Creating an honest historical record. It’s a very low bar.

Y’all think people who bring up race and Latinidad are stirring the pot, kicking up dirt, ruining the fun, when relegating Afro-Latinx people to the background airs all the dirty laundry.

Critique does not = hating. “In The Heights” was the first and only Broadway show I ever paid to see. I took my mother and bought the pricey CD soundtrack souvenir because I loved the music. We were in the nosebleed theater seats, but wanted to support Latinos on Broadway.

The way people don’t “see” a problem with the Heights casting, is the same way people don’t “see” racism/erasure of Afro-Latinos in real life. We’re talking health disparities, economic exclusion, racist beauty standards, micro-aggressions. It’s bigger than a movie.

Like Americans who are nostalgic about an America that never existed— who can’t take the truth of a 1619 project— denial about racism/colorism entrenched in Latino communities fails everyone.

These blackface images aren’t from the American south. They’re from Puerto Rico. The people who wore the blackface are *still alive.* And Afro-Latinos are sensitive?pic.twitter.com/qgC4FR9tMW

“In The Heights” can’t be reshot at this point, but Hollywood decision-makers should be thinking ahead. I know plenty of Afro-Latinx filmmakers, writers and creatives doing independent work. Be intersectional— nuanced in your thinking about Latino projects. Support them.

Black Latina women have been doing critical work around Afro-Latinidad for years. There is no excuse not to know these things anymore.

The “In The Heights” race and colorism conversation presents yet another to learn and do better, if only people will take it.

We saw it on Broadway when it first came out. We were stunned and said “Who is this incredible guy?” We followed up by seeing Hamilton on Broadway and were amazed. Just saw the movie of Heights yesterday. Amazing performances and out of this world choreography.

Only one Broadway show ever?!? (sorry, I know that's not the point of the thread)
