My favorite part about planning women in products dinners: 1. Check LinkedIn and don’t find any woman on a company’s product team 2. Reach out to male product leaders asking if they have any woman on their team that want to join One small step towards awareness...

Question I keep coming back to when chatting with early-stage founders about bottoms-up distribution: How are you... a) tapping into an existing community? b) creating your own community? c) both.

If there is a single key to success, it is the trait of being able to make things happen in the world—willfulness, determination, execution focus, not giving up when you hit a roadblock, the ability to solve any problem that comes your way, and self-belief.

Writing an intro email and accidentally added a link to the person's Twitter profile instead of their LinkedIn. I guess Twitter's the new LinkedIn.

A lot of the nuance in our conversations that's hard to capture post-facto via twitter... Also, for anyone who wants a visual... this is my dad in the Xerox World magazine... looking good, dad!

When talking about Adobe, he consistently gives credit to the sales & marketing teams over the years This is probably partially a reaction to Xerox PARC days and missed opportunity ... but also a healthy reminder that strong go to market execution can help you win markets

He’ll tell of Jobs visiting the PARC office to learn about their tech… eventually going on to commercialize it at Apple He joked he left PARC "two years too late”... they built cutting edge tech - laser printers, ethernet, GUI,etc - but struggled to commercialize it time again

When recounting the Flash v HTML5 debate, my dad kept matter of factly emphasizing how Steve Jobs had an "uncanny ability to see where tech was going… and he was usually right” Maybe this is because he had seen Job’s prophetism play out once before at Xerox PARC

To use Flash, you needed to install a plug-in - a task that required dodging multiple pop-ups and several minutes of download time depending on your internet speeds This was a clunky UX versus HTML 5 which ran natively in the browser... a reminder that low friction UX is king

Flash was powerful technology but, like any complex software, it had it’s slew of security vulnerabilities It became a hot bed for malware with consumers downloading viruses disguised as Flash player plug-ins… talk about a PR nightmare

Yet in 2010 (a few years post iPhone launch) Steve Jobs wrote his notorious open letter “thoughts on flash” - The letter gave Apple’s support for HTML5 and called out what he saw as Flash’s flaws - built for PCs not mobile, closed not open, and more

I didn’t quite grasp the power of Flash back then, especially how it could power the next wave of mobile apps… let alone how big mobile would become

Adobe placed a bet on Flash as the future of apps I remember one thanksgiving dinner when my dad shared he was building a new thing called “Adobe Air” - a platform where developers could build mobile/desktop apps powered by Flash

At the time, Flash was once one of the most widely used tools for delivery audio / visual / animation on the web Flash became ubiquitous, both because of its speed and its ability to smoothly render graphics - it was compact, efficient, and designed for optimized delivery

Adobe acquired Macromedia in 2005 Most ppl associate the acq. with Flash, but my Dad emphasized Dreamweaver being a core asset for Adobe Both products helped capture customers in web graphics, a genre that Adobe largely hadn’t touched given it’s focus on digital publishing
