On this day in 1917, the US gave Puerto Ricans "Citizenship", then sent them off to WWI and subsequently to several other wars. Many "citizens" lost their lives while in service. 101 years later these same "citizens" have yet to gain the right to Vote.
Correction we became a US Territory in 1898 as a concession of the Treaty of Paris. Today we “celebrate” 101 years of second class citizenship, NO presidential vote, NO representation in Congress. Til when?
Till they stop voting for the PPD, which *Opposes equality *Opposes statehood *Opposes Congress representation. *Opposes english as primary & co official language. *Fought an attempt to incorporate Puerto Rico earlier this year , resulting in PR being charged a foreign tax!
You forgot to mention that President Woodrow Wilson then had 20,000 Puerto Rican men drafted to help fight in WW1.
The truth is you do not have to be a US citizen to be part of the US Armed Forces. Legal residents, nationals and even undocumented aliens have been recruited. From 1898 to 1917, before US citizenship was granted to Puerto Rico some residents of the island were serving already.
Exactly when did the U.S. government decide that assisting Puerto Rico through a devastating natural disaster wasn't a priority??
