I know people whose parents told them bugs were "watching them" a la elf on the shelf. As adults they still had fear reaction to even butterflies & ladybugs. This isn't just "kids don't go outdoors," it's parents who don't know kids need examples of good behavior, not terrorizing

That's terrible. I hate Elf on the Shelf. That thing creeps me out. Then to take that idea to bugs? Worst.

I teach undgrads who want to be elementary teachers. A HUGE goal of mine is to help them overcome their fears of insects and the outdoors. Visiting bee hives, in bee suits has helped.

One day I read “Horton Hears a Who” to my class and a little ant was crawling in the middle of our circle at the carpet. All of the kids were like, “Miss, we have to help it.” So as a class we safely brought our little and friend outside.
