    Seeing Facebook (or Russia) as the source of our political problems suggests that fixing Facebook (or Russia) fixes our problems. That's a fallacy. There is no substitute for reestablishing meaningful connection between democratic politics and the public good. /1

    This. It's not to excuse or anyone else. The fact remains that data sharing agreements underlie much of this industry and are susceptible to similar failure modes.

    I've criticized Facebook plenty, but I'm also seeing lots of people scapegoating the company for data practices that are quite routine. If you are upset about Cambridge Analytica, your privacy concerns are much much broader than one isolated incident.
