No, for real. Google "Dean Scream." They gave it a fucking term and everything.

There was a show on NPR called Talk of the Nation. Daily call in show. Ran until 2013. They did a political day (Wednesdays, I think), with its own little intro. And every week for every year since it happened, the Talk of the Nation political intro contained the Dean Scream.

To this day, pundits and analysts will tell you Howard Dean's campaign was ruined by a weird noise he made. But look at the President now. At "Grab 'em by the pussy" and everything before and since. The noise didn't ruin Dean. That was just the excuse.

Ultimately that election year, after kneecapping Dean the party went on to nominate John Kerry, whose bland mediocrity failed to raise enough enthusiasm to oust Dubya. I don't know if Dean could have won, but I know he made us excited in a way Kerry didn't. So he had to go.

Yup. That one little noise he made with his mouth, and suddenly he was "unhinged" and "deranged." The notion was picked up by enemies and "allies" alike.https://twitter.com/Arnoldoaad/status/1222085178950066176 …

Dean went on to be chairman of the Democratic National Committee; it's not like his career ended in ignominy.

No, but his only shot at the White House did. We needed enthusiasm in 2004. We got Kerry instead, because he was "safe." I don't know if Dean would have won, but we would have had a better candidate.

Thing about the Dean Scream is...the only reason it sound “unhinged” or “deranged” is because he did it right into a microphone. Scream ANYTHING into a microphone as it’s going to sound exaggerated.

Dan Quayle was ruined because of a spelling contest, Nixon won because someone gave him a dog. Politics are weird.
-
Eh, Quayle was a pretty huge ding dong aside from how he spelled "potato"
