Is a New Nuclear Age Upon Us? My latest with ⁦⁩ in ⁦⁩. Happy New Year all.

New START expires one year from today. If the treaty lapses there will be no limits on the US and Russian nuclear arsenals for the first time in half a century. Unconstrained nuclear competition could follow. The Trump administration remains undecided on whether to extend.

President Trump still loves Kim Jong Un and their “great relationship” so much that he got exactly zero mentions in an election year State of the Union. In these two hours, Kim probably built another nuke [just kidding, maybe a missile, a nuke takes NK a month]

Sounds so nice. Bada bing bada boom, no one gets hurt. You know, like the Suleimani strike and the “sterile” retaliation that ended up with 50 US personnel with brain trauma and 180 civilians dead on a civilian airliner. But nuclear exchanges will go just like this 👍🏽.

And I’ll reiterate my biggest concern: the only targets the low yield SLBM can really threaten that our existing low yield nukes can’t are high value targets *deep* in Russian (or Chinese) territory. So you’re buying yourself a strategic nuclear war irrespective of the yield.

Almost exactly two years ago I wrote this article, identifying the so-called “discrimination problem” with low yield SLBMs. Today these weapons were officially announced as deployed. So I thought I’d reup it in case anyone is interested.

Great news. I’ve personally put in a lot of effort over the past five years to help make this happen and ensure the US had this capability to deter Russia.

It will be difficult for defence to get a bigger piece of the pie in India. The only way defence will get significantly more resources in India is to expand the pie -- that, in turn, would require a much higher economic growth rate.

I take no comfort from the fact that most of the people who advocated for this dumb idea live within the Beltway and will be incinerated early on after Russia mistakes their “low-yield” nuke for a first strike, and begins global thermonuclear war.

The US Navy is now fielding a low-yield submarine-launched nuclear missile. Read on why this is such a bad idea, from the archives

What it omits is that, yes, the low yield SLBM is prompt and survivable but it is also an intercontinental range low yield nuke that can hold at risk a whole array of targets—eg leadership targets deep in Russia’s homeland—that we presently can’t. Is that a good idea? 🤷🏽‍♂️

India will have a harder time arguing that its economic reputation isn’t decided by some newspaper in New York. When it comes to the economy, external confidence is everything, and that old liberal rag ⁦⁩ is losing it in Modi’s handling of it.

Grateful to all the doctors and nurses out there, and especially those at Mass General Hospital, a reminder that our common humanity is still greater than the things that divide us. 🙏🏽

Meanwhile Central Minister doesn't spark off a controversy, apparently, when he calls an elected CM without any record, a "terrorist".

That presumes they actually want dialogue, and not violence as a pretext for a crackdown.
