The NFI cables that sort of look like a micro USB is a 1394 cable, also known as FireWire. Precursor to Apple's Thunderbolt and later, Lightning. Cat5 to USB is good for computers with a dead NIC or none to start with. Also used in loopback testing to rule out hardware issues.
The puzzle pieces fall into place. Except that I have no idea how I got any of these :D
