I always eject an external storage device at least four times before unplugging because WHAT IF IT BREAKS OR SOMETHING

Good for you; I've had to help two colleagues attempt to recover as much data as possible after they just yanked theirs out.

it doesn't do anything, it just *stops* using the device if you are transfering something, pulling out when it's not in use it's the same
